AGWG Committee Vacancies

The Animal Geography Working Group (AGWG) are advertising two committee vacancies before their AGM on 3rd September, 2025. We are a relatively new working group of the RGS and have been very active over the last few years in promoting the interests and work of animal geographers. Our committee is a dedicated, diverse and friendly group and we are excited for new committee members to join us.

Postgraduate Officer (one-year post)

This role provides an excellent opportunity for a PGR to connect with animal geographers across career stages and build links across the discipline. The role involves a very small time commitment and the position holder will receive strong support from other committee members.

·                Promote postgraduate interests and the needs of the wider Research Group.

·                (Co-)Lead AGWG Emerging voices in Animal Geographies Conference Sessions at the annual RGS-IBG Conference

·                Maintain connection with the wider postgraduate community through the Postgraduate Forum and potential blog posts.

·                Advocate for the wider postgraduate community.

·                Support with wider research group initiatives where you can (such as marking an undergraduate dissertation as part of our annual prize).

·                Attend committee meetings, typically one per semester.

As a research group we are keen to reflect the diversity of our community and we encourage any postgraduate researchers in the sub-discipline to apply. We also note that this role maybe be split between two postgraduates to share the experience of being part of a research group.

Treasurer (3-year post):

The Treasurer is a member of the executive committee of the Animal Geography Working Group, alongside the Chair (Dr Catherine Oliver) and Secretary (Dr Hannah Dickinson). The main duties of the Treasurer are:

  • Managing and keeping the accounts for the group.

  • Ensuring payments are made on behalf of the group.

  • Compiling and submitting the group’s annual financial reporting.

  • Decision-making on committee activities as part of the Executive committee.

  • Supporting and, where appropriate, co-leading research group activities.

  • Attending committee meetings - typically one per semester.

  • Attending wider RGS research group meetings where necessary.

The Treasurer must be a Fellow of the Society. Those who are interested in taking on a Research Group executive committee role (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer), but whose circumstances prevent them from taking up Society Fellowship, are invited to submit an expression of interest for an executive role bursary [rgs.org] to support Fellowship. The RGS offers a lot of support to the Treasurer, so do not be put off about dealing with finances!

To apply for either role please email our Secretary, Dr Hannah Dickinson (hannah.dickinson@manchester.ac.uk), and Treasurer, Dr Jamie Arathoon (j.arathoon1@yorksj.ac.uk) with a short expression of interest (50-100 words). Nominations should also include the name of a seconder from the current committee — (we can help with this if needed!) We welcome any informal enquires about the roles, so please do not hesitate to get in touch. All applicants will be expected to attend our online AGM on Wednesday 3rd September at midday (BST).

Deadline for applications: 1st September

Date of AGM: 3rd September midday (online)
